This material is specifically designed to support instruction in the course ESI 4523: Simulation of Industrial Engineering Systems. It provides a comprehensive and integrated treatment of the essential statistical foundations and modeling principles required for the development of simulation models.

The material combines th eoretical concepts with practical procedures, enabling students to perform discrete-event simulations of manufacturing and service systems, as well as fundamental Monte Carlo simulation techniques. Emphasis is placed on developing both technical competence and structured analytical thinking, which are critical for effective simulation modeling.

The Role of the Industrial Engineer

Beyond technical implementation, this book highlights the distinctive role of the Industrial Engineer (IE). While many can produce visual or computational representations of systems, the IE is trained to go significantly further: to construct models that yield meaningful insights and support decision-making aligned with organizational objectives.

This requires the ability to abstract complex systems, identify key variables, and represent reality in a concise yet powerful manner. Such capabilities demand curiosity, discipline, and a strong analytical mindset—skills that are both rare and highly valued in engineering practice.

Relevance of Simulation

Simulation plays a central role in modern manufacturing, service system design, and operational analysis. It is increasingly recognized as a foundational component in fields such as Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics, where modeling uncertainty and evaluating system performance are essential.

About the author

Dr. Ernesto L. Garcia C. is an engineer with extensive experience in industry, academia, and consulting. He currently serves as teaching faculty at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, where he works closely with senior students on capstone projects addressing real-world challenges in manufacturing, service systems, and data-driven decision-making. His professional work focuses on integrating analytical methods, statistical modeling, and engineering principles to translate complex organizational objectives into effective and actionable solutions.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Garcia has led and contributed to large-scale initiatives in operations improvement, systems optimization, and performance management. He has guided multidisciplinary teams in the application of Lean Six Sigma, Operations Research, and Advanced Analytics to enhance processes, reduce costs, and improve operational efficiency. His work spans diverse industries and international environments, where he has consistently emphasized the combination of rigorous analytical frameworks with practical implementation strategies.

Dr. Garcia holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Missouri–Columbia, where he was a Fulbright Scholar, as well as graduate degrees in business administration and managerial economics from EGADE Business School of ITESM in Mexico City. He also earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering from ITESM at Monterrey campus. His academic and professional contributions are centered on developing engineers with strong analytical thinking skills and a disciplined modeling approach.

Dedication

To S, J, and I,… my amazing girls.

I love them at ten in the morning, and at eleven, and at twelve noon. I love them with all my soul and —sometimes— on rainy afternoons.1
